Vanity of Memento Mori

This painting is the start of an investigation into the assumptions and platitudes of well-meaning friends and family. It centers on a family photo overlaid with iconic imagery, such as a pop-color skull and graphic text, sharing the visual language of ripped backgrounds and folded paper. The symbolism draws heavily from classic vanitas paintings. Additionally, the motifs of smoking and scraped-off stickers act as a nod to the palimpsests of the past, representing layers of history and meaning.

FLORA AND FLESH

Through this work, I aim to convey a sense of isolation from a feminine perspective, specifically representing the archetype of the maiden. By floating the floral pattern around the figure, she becomes visually integrated into the background. Hiding her hands serves to obscure the connective relationship of tenderness and touch, concealing these intimate gestures behind the painting's decorative shroud so they are hidden from the viewer. The delicate nature of the flowers and the subject's gentle posture are violently interrupted by the severed shroud above her head, leaving her face exposed and vividly red. This acts as a visceral, bloody exposure of the feminine, representing autonomy cutting through passive, decorative elements.

FLOURISH

This video installation examines the cyclical rhythms and sexual nature of the feminine experience. Functioning as a deep exploration of the feminine archetype, the work traces the inevitable transitions from decay and death through to vitality and birth. The resulting piece is simultaneously meditative and confronting. As the viewer watches flowers birth and release animals before pulling them back into themselves, they are invited to reflect on the beautiful, sometimes unsettling, cycles of creation and destruction.
